CAC has joined the settlement reached in the current AES Indiana rate case. We believe the proposed settlement reflects a positive outcome for customers that may not have been achieved through litigation. If approved by the IURC, the settlement will reduce AES Indiana’s rate of return on equity, or profit, and will allow a much smaller increase to the monthly fixed customer charge than what was proposed.
In September 2023, NIPSCO filed with the IURC to charge customers at least $641.2 MILLION to build a new dirty fossil gas peaker plant that will operate less than 20% of the year. The projected $641.2 million price tag is an estimate; NIPSCO indicates the cost of the plant could increase by as much as 30%.
Ben Inskeep, CAC Program Director, asked the IURC to reject AES Indiana’s proposed rate increase, and lower the residential monthly fixed charge and the profit margin included in the rates that customers pay to AES Indiana. Mr. Inskeep concluded that AES Indiana’s proposed rate increase would impose an extraordinary additional financial burden on Indianapolis families who are already struggling to cope with an acute unaffordability crisis. The case is docketed before the IURC as Cause No. 45911.
These are the issues of immediate importance we are working on right now.
